via Daily Prompt: Elastic

Elastic:  able to resume its normal shape spontaneously after contraction, dilatation, or distortion.

You know what elastic is, right? It’s that stuff in your waistband that snaps back to size even if it was stretched before.  It’s very useful in pajama pants, underwear, pretty much any clothing with elastic is going to be comfortable and easy to fit.

People need to be more like elastic.  I know I am, but many other people in my life are not.  I’ve written several times about bad things that have happened to me, but I always snap back.  Some people have never had any challenges in their life, and just one obstacle can be devastating.  Unexpected illness, money problems, unexpected family death, these are all things that people have to deal with every day.  I have dealt with many things, and always seem to bounce back, in an elastic-like way.

I’ve had many things bring me down, unexpected declining health, new diagnoses, stress, depression, abuse as a child, bullying, swimming in a category 5 hurricane.  You name it, I’ve probably dealt with it.  I have people tell my all the time, “I couldn’t deal with what you do.  I have no idea how you do it.”  Honestly, sometimes I don’t either.  What I try to do is keep being positive, and keep looking forward to a better time.  I have belief in the universe that things always work out the way they are supposed to, and that, eventually, it always get better.  Our job as minuscule specks of the universe, is to learn how to deal with that.  We have to become like elastic.  Able to stretch, but always coming back to form eventually.  If we were more flexible in our lives, and less rigid, I promise life gets easier.  Sometimes we have to take a step back and allow ourselves to be elastic bands in the universe.  Being resilient is something that everyone has to learn how to do in their own time and own way.

For me, life is easier when I remember to take a step back, and just let life happen.  I can’t control it, and stressing about it helps no one.  No matter what, I always overcome and snap back into place.  If we could all be a little more elastic, life could be easier to deal with.
